Printing Options for Training Manuals
Digital Printing
PDI uses toner based digital laser printers to print mono (black and white) or in full colour. The costs of colour and mono – (explained in the Video below) are significantly different. We do have some clever software which can automatically extract colour pages from an essentially black and white document and then recombine the finished product. This system – referred to as ‘mixed media’ allows for the total cost to be as competitive as possible.
Litho Printing
The blog on the costs of litho vs digital explains in detail the costs differences between the two printing techniques. In summary – lithographic (or litho) – is the more cost effective for long run print copies - 100 copies or more. For short run digital is more cost effective because it has little or no set up costs.
PRINT ON DEMAND PRINTING
The training industry tends to work far more with digital printing. Training manuals update constantly and change with the needs of their clients. Stock holding of litho printed products is not common – PDI can facilitate this if required.
COST PER DELEGATE
Because we print training manuals, we offer a cost per delegate price i.e. we will charge the same for one manual as for 10 manuals. This is unusual in the printing industry which will generally charges a minimum order fee. We do not do that because training companies need to know their cost per delegate. That is not to say we averse to volume discounts but the cost per delegate works well in training.
Binding Options for Training Manuals
Wire Binding - WIRO
The most commonly used format in the training industry because the manual will lie flat when open. This allows delegates to make notes in the manual. Often with a printed cover and also and acetate to keep book clean
Ring Binding
Whilst more expensive than the wire – it does allow for delegates to add handouts and other training items to their manual. We use ring binders with pockets at the front and spine so that a printed cover and spine can be inserted, allowing the book to look personalised.
Perfect Binding
Saddle Stitched Booklets
Stapled booklets – known as saddle stitched
Ideal for smaller text and reference books - ideally no more then 48 printed pages. Larger books look much better perfect bound.
